The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an upcoming English-language thriller film that is the second film based on the Swedish novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson with Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger.
Paula Zahn talks with actor Christopher Plummer about his long career, focusing on his role in the new HBO movie “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight,” co-starring Shirley MacLaine, and the upcoming GREAT PERFORMANCES presentation of “Barrymore.”
Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer, Oscar winners both, will soon be bringing a little old-Hollywood glamor to New Orleans, as they head to town to work on the romantic comedy "Elsa & Fred." Directed by Michael Radford -- who also wrote the script, based on a 2005 Spanish-language film -- it is scheduled to shoot Dec. 3 to Jan. 17.
The film tells the story of an aging couple who meet each other late in life, and who -- according to the film's IMDB.com entry -- "discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true." MacLaine will play Elsa, a Fellini-obsessed whirlwind who injects a newfound energy into Fred's life. Plummer will play Fred, who decides it's up to him to make Elsa's lifelong dream come true.
"Elsa & Fred" is being produced by Matthia Whrenberg, Ricardo Kleinbaum, Jose Levy, Edward Saxon and Nicolas Veinberg for Defiant Pictures. It is one of the newest entries on the latest state-issued accounting of in-state film and TV production activity.
Elsa and Fred" is the story of two people who, at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Elsa has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene in 'La Dolce Vita' at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it, but with Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroiani but with that love that took so long to arrive. Fred is a bit younger than Elsa and has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends meeting Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into his life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live -- be it more or less -- is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases. Fred surrenders to Elsa's frenzy, to her youth, to her boldness, to her beautiful madness. And this is how Fred learns how to live. When he learns about Elsa's terminal illness, he decides to make her dream come true and takes Elsa to Rome to reenact with her the famous scene at the Fontana di Trevi

‘The Girl With Dragon Tattoo’ wins best editing at Oscars
Los Angeles, Feb 27Director David Fincher’s “The Girl With Dragon Tattoo” won the golden statuette for best editing for Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall at the 84th Academy Awards.
One win out of five nominations ain't bad, right? The big screen adaption of Stieg Larsson's crime drama was a huge hit with audiences, but not so much with the Academy. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo earned recognition for best actress in a leading role, cinematography, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing. Out of those options, one would imagine Rooney Mara would take home best actress, but that would be an incorrect assumption. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was awarded a little golden dude for film editing.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pulled some surprises Tuesday morning in its Oscar nominations for the 2012 Academy Awards, with the 5,783 voting members highlighting specific performances while snubbing the directors behind the films, and in other cases choosing a film and ignoring its stars.
Each of the four acting categories left at least one likely contender off the list in favor of a surprise choice. Rooney Mara scored a best actress nomination for her role in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," but her director, David Fincher, was ignored, as was the film in the best picture category. Mara's inclusion meant "We Need to Talk About Kevin's" lead actress Tilda Swinton was left off the list.
International Trailer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Explores the Partnership
After releasing a long trailer at the end of last month, Columbia Pictures has released a new, international trailer for the remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That makes three trailers total in the past four months.
The latest trailer focuses on the partnership between Lisbeth and journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), as the attempt to solve the 40-year-old disappearance of a young woman at the behest of successful businessman Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer).
Christopher Plummer has joined the cast of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The mighty acting veteran (oh, Captain my Captain von Trapp!) will play Henrik Vanger, the ailing tycoon who hires Daniel Craig’s Mikael Blomkvist to solve the mystery of his niece’s disappearance.
Plummer will join the cast that already includes Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellen Skarsgard, Robin Wright Penn and Max von Sydow.David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel goes like this: “Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.
New The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo opens December 21, and stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. As though you didn’t know.
This second trailer offers more of a look into what makes Mikael and Lisbeth tick, and might help assuage fears that the American version can in no way measure up to the Swedish version with Michael Nykvist and Noomi Rapace. The supporting cast for the film includes Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, Julian Sands, Goran Visnjic, and Joely Richardson.
At first glance, it looks amazing. We’ll all see on December 21 if the actual film lives up to its cast and trailers.
